Lectors serve by proclaiming the readings during the Liturgy of the Word, first described by our Jewish brothers and sisters as the part of the synagogue service where the saving works of God were celebrated and proclaimed to the chosen people. Catholic Christians believe that anytime we gather to pray and worship, Christ is present in the Word we hear proclaimed and indeed speaks to us in this proclamation, especially in the Gospel. Therefore, this ministry is a vital one to the community. It involves a commitment to read for the Mass which you are scheduled, and involves some personal time to prepare the readings in advance, and to meet occasionally for ongoing training and enrichment.
